We will remember them
1918-2018
On Sunday 11 November 2018, Nettlebed and District Branch Royal British Legion will join the Nation and host a series of events to commemorate and mark the end of World War 1, one hundred years ago, and to remember those local men who gave their lives for their Country.
6.00 am Battles Over – Sleep in Peace, now the battle’s over. Before dawn has broken the air will be filled with the sound of a lone piper. Battle’s O’er. A traditional air played by pipers after a battle. Heralding the start of the day’s commemorations.
10.30 am The Village are invited to join in a parade of the Branch Standard starting from the Bus Shelter to St Bartholomew’s Church. The Remembrance Day Service will begin outside the Church at the Lytch Gate, the Village War memorial, at 10.45am. Following our remembering the fallen of WW1 we will continue the Service inside St Bartholomew’s to include remembering those who died during WW2.
3.30 pm A concert of music and poetry, in association with The Pangbourne Silver Band. All welcome. Tickets not required, but seating will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Donations to the Poppy appeal are welcomed
6.50 pm The Village will join HM Queen Elizabeth 2 and 1,000 towns and villages across the Nation lighting our traditional bonfire Beacon of Peace. This commemoration is inspired by a comment made on 3rd August 1914 by Britain’s Foreign Minister, Sir Edward Grey. He was looking out of his office window at dusk as gas lights were being lit along London’s Mall when he remarked to a friend, “ The lights are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.”
7.05 pm As our beacon burns brightly, the Church Bells will ring out in celebration of the end of the First World War.
