How to deal with parking fines – Citizens Advice

There can be few experiences as disheartening and utterly deflating as floating back to your car after some marvellously therapeutic shopping trip, laden with parcels and shopping bags, to find a black and yellow parking notification attached to your windscreen, like some enormous striped stinging hornet - and certainly having a stinging effect on your wallet too. It could spoil anyone’s day - but don't let it! Don't panic, don’t curse and don't waste any time before getting to grips with the problem.  The Citizens Advice website has a useful section which you should consult: https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/law-and-courts/parking-tickets/  If you think the ticket was justified (and let’s face it, some of them are), one option is to pay the fine right away, thus getting a substantial discount: 50% if you pay a Penalty Charge Notice or Excess Charge Notice within 14 days 40-60% if you pay a Parking Charge Notice within 14 days If you think that you were parked correctly and within the rules, or there were mitigating...

Patterson family photos about 1911 – seeking descendants

Email received from Alison Souster  I am looking through old inherited photos and have a number that belonged to my great aunt of people I don’t have any personal connection with, but the family seems to have lived in Nettlebed - possibly early in the 20th century and definitely in 1911.  I wondered if it might be possible for you to ask if the family has any relatives still in the area who I might be able to forward the photos to as I am unable to keep them much longer. The family surname is Patterson, and there were three daughters: Rosamund, Linda and Betty. I attach a sample of the photos - please share if you wish.  I have others too. I believe, from an Ancestry record, that one of them may have died in Banbury in 1969 (or possibly their mother?).  It would be very much appreciated if you could share this message and let me know of any feedback? Many thanks...

Community groups have told us that one of the biggest obstacles they face when trying to attract volunteers is finding money to meet training, transport and insurances costs, so we've set aside £25,000 to provide financial support. Small voluntary groups can apply for a grant of between £250 and £750 to help cover costs. The grant scheme is being trialled and could be extended in the future, depending on its success in helping to improve the district's voluntary sector. To...

What to do in the event of a Powercut

Communication received from UK Power Networks You may have seen the forecast of unsettled weather over the next few days with heavy rain and lightning affecting parts of the East and South East of England. We are currently monitoring the weather closely and we are in regular contact with the Met Office as the forecast develops. Our electricity network is built to be resilient but extreme weather can affect overhead and underground power lines, resulting in some customers losing their electricity supply. Where this happens we work to restore power as quickly and safely as possible. We have organised for additional staff in our contact centre to help customers whose electricity supply might be affected by the predicted weather, and we have called-up additional engineers to carry out repairs to our electricity network. You will be able to find regular updates on our website www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk and social media @UKPowerNetworks throughout this period. Anyone experiencing a power cut should: Call 105 to report power...
