On Tuesday 19th December the Home Secretary announced a substantial £450 million increase in police funding across England and Wales. However, this funding package assumes that all PCCs will raise the police element of council tax by £1 a month (or £12 a year) for a band D property which, collectively, will raise £270 million of the £450 million increase. This settlement will allow forces to continue to provide an effective service in their critical work to fight crime and protect the public. At present around 60% of Thames Valley Police’s £393 million annual policing budget is funded by central government, with the policing element of council tax making up the remainder. Dear Editor You might want to add to what I sent you yesterday that in the last few days my office and I have had conversations with Malthouse Ltd who run the petrol station. It is clear that this decision is being taken because Malthouse Ltd believes the Post Office is not commercially viable and not because the Post Office nationally wants to close it down. We continue to be in touch with Malthouse and hope that, after the Christmas break, we can meet them to pursue the matter. I also have a meeting with the Regional Manager for the Post Office in the diary for early in the New Year and will, of course, discuss this among other things. Thank you for your email. I have recently become aware that there is a problem in Nettlebed with the Post Office and do appreciate how important the facility is. You may have heard a recent Government announcement on additional investment in the Post Office network. This may be timely and I will need to check the detail. However the problem may not be on the Post Office or Government side but rather issues within Malthouse Garage. Until I have the local detail I cannot say more. Reply to: Mr John Howell MP, House of Commons, London SW1A 0AA john.howell.mp@parliament.uk   Dear Residents, You may, or may not, be aware that notification has been received from POST OFFICE LIMITED of the closure of the Post Office facility by the present tenant MRH (GB) Ltd (Malthouse Petroleum) at the end of the February 2018.  The reason given by MRH(Ltd) is that, quote,” we have been unable to place the appropriate levels of insurance for the cash handling risk at the site”. As you are aware this Post Office provides an invaluable service for Nettlebed and the local villages. We’d like to suggest that as many residents as possible individually write to: Mr John Howell MP, House of Commons, London SW1A 0AA john.howell.mp@parliament.uk requesting assistance in keeping this valuable service going and maintaining the Post Office in Nettlebed. Hello, My father, Bruno Reiter, lived in Nettlebed for many years (two decades?).  Last week, his wife, Sirkka, passed away at her home in Finland.   I know that Sirkka was well appreciated by people in the village. Among other charitable activities I know she gave comfort to patients and elderly persons with foot massage, pedicure and other treatments. I write to you in case you know people in Nettlebed who remember Sirkka. I would like to contact them to get a better idea of Sirkka's activities in the village so I can include brief words in my eulogy at the funeral, which will be in the New Year. Revd Brendan Bailey would like to thank the many friends and neighbours in Nettlebed and the surroundings who have written to express support and encouragement for him and his family over this difficult year. The recent snow caused a few problems. The best way to avoid this is to clear the snow as soon as it falls and before it gets compacted by people and vehicles. I am suggesting that we all clear snow outside our own properties and the pavements outside the homes of those not able to do it themselves. Snow shovels make it a lot easier and are available from £5 in shops or online - see snow shovels on Amazon It is often said that there is a risk of being sued if you clear snow and then somebody falls.
